Overview
Community Medicine
The Department of Community Health, SJMC, envisages enhancing the health of the community taking into consideration not only the curative aspect but also the preventive, promotive and rehabilitative aspects.
Community Health Training Centre, Mugalur is the rural outreach centre of the department, situated at Mugalur, about 30 kms from Bangalore where a wide range of health services are provided to people of the surrounding villages. This centre forms the base for the department’s community based research activities in keeping with the mission of the institution which is “Reaching the unreached”. The Mugalur CHTC serves three important functions:
- Training - Residential training facility for the training of Undergraduate medical, MD post graduate students in Community Medicine, nursing students, medical interns, foreign elective students and community health workers.
- Service - A Primary care hospital serving the rural community, offering medical services in the form of daily out patient services, monthly clinics including Geriatric clinic, Non-Communicable Diseases Clinic, MCH and Well woman clinic, Maanasi-mental health clinic, Community based Ophthalmology services, Community based ENT services, Tobacco Cessation clinics, Community based palliative care services, Diabetic foot care clinic, promotive and rehabilitative services by Unit of Hope and multi speciality clinics, community based follow up by trained health workers, individual and family counseling services and non medical services like Community development initiatives and women’s empowerment activities form heart of the activities at the CHTC
- Research - A field base for the Community Outreach service and research activities of the Department of Community Health, and other departments of St. John's Medical College.
The Department of Community Health, has been working to provide health services to the urban underprivileged in the area of Austin Town, Bangalore, covering a population of over 6300, through its Urban Health Centre in collaboration with Biocon Foundation. The services offered at the UHTC are:
- Training: It serves as a training facility for Undergraduate medical students which includes Family Adoption Program visits and visits to Anganwadi. MD post graduates in Community Health are posted as medical officer for 2 months. Foreign elective students also receive training from the Urban Health and Training Centre
- Service: It serves the urban underprivileged population in the form of daily out patient services, monthly clinics by the faculty of the department like Under 5 clinic, Non- Communicable Disease Clinic, Geriatric clinic, Well woman clinic , laboratory services, community based follow up by health workers, counseling services, anganwadi health checkups and and health education sessions in the community.
- Research: The UHTC also is a field base for research activities of the Department of Community Health and other departments of St. John's Medical College.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Speciality Clinics
Multi-Specialty clinics are organized alternatively at the Primary Health Centers of Sarjapur and Dommasandra on the 2nd Tuesday. Faculty from the departments of Dermatology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, and General Medicine offer services at these clinics including referral services.
Well woman's camp is organized by the department of Community Health once in 3 months based on the demand from the villages. A team of doctors from the department of Community Health, Gynecologic Oncology along with the health workers offer services in the camp. The camp is organized in co-ordination with the Women's Self Help Groups in the villages. The camp services include screening for Non-Communicable Diseases including Mental illness, screening for Oral, Breast and Cervical cancers. Women aged 21 years and above are screened for cervical cancer by Pap smear. The HPV vaccine is offered for females aged 9 to 15 years.
