Maanasi-Rural mental health services
Maanasi is a community mental health program, based at CHTC, Mugalur and supported by the Rotary International. Maanasi was initiated in the year 2002 and provides comprehensive mental health care services while also addressing co-morbidities in persons with mental illness from surrounding villages. Currently, there are 2408 patients enrolled in Maanasi, of which 1/4th visit the clinic for regular follow-ups.
The services of Maanasi include weekly consultations with a psychiatrist, counselling, referrals, subsidized medications, health education, home visits by health workers, as well as rehabilitation. A team comprising a psychiatrist and a community health physician visit the clinic every Friday for consultation. A medico-social worker visits the clinic once a month and provides counseling services. Maanasi also has a team of three health workers and one data entry operator that work with the community between the clinics to ensure service delivery. The health workers visit the homes of the enrolled patients for follow-ups and reminders for regular visits. They also provide treatment adherence support to patients during their visits and support to family members. In addition, they assist families with obtaining disability certificates and disability pension. Psychiatry medications are provided either at concessional cost or for those who cannot pay for free of charge. Health education sessions conducted in the clinics for the members of local self-help groups, youth and care givers of patients.
Empowerment initiatives with skill inducement -tailoring and material assistance (sewing machines) for rehabilitating the treated mentally ill persons (especially, women), adopting technology for improving medical information system with eMaanasi database module development are the other flagship initiatives.
