“Sympathetic Overactivity and Sleep Deprivation: A Dual Burden in the Development of Metabolic Syndrome in Urban Asian Indian population”
Project Description
Metabolic Syndrome is a rapidly growing public health concern, affecting a significant proportion of the global population. It is associated with a heightened risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and premature mortality. While the syndrome has traditionally been linked with lifestyle factors such as diet, physical inactivity, and obesity, emerging research underscores the importance of less explored, yet crucial, physiological domains particularly sleep and ANS regulation. Despite growing recognition of these associations, few studies have comprehensively examined the interplay between sleep quality, autonomic dysfunction, and the metabolic abnormalities that define MS in urban Asian Indians. Moreover, the bidirectional nature of these relationships whereby metabolic changes may further impair sleep and autonomic function has not been sufficiently explored. This highlights a significant gap in current literature and clinical practice. Therefore, there is a pressing need for focused research into the role of sleep and autonomic imbalance in the etiology and progression of metabolic syndrome.
