Study Of Healthy Ageing Metrics in Elderly people – the “SOHAM” cohort study

Project Description

People worldwide are growing older. By 2030, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or above. Ageing is an inevitable process due to a wide variety of molecular and cellular damage over time. As a result of this, there is a gradual decrease in physical and mental capacity including increased risk of disease. Ageing is proposed to have different trajectories which could be seen as tracks of “healthy” and “unhealthy” ageing. The determinants of healthy versus unhealthy ageing are a point of current interest worldwide. WHO has declared the years between 2020 to 2030 as the “Decade of Healthy Ageing”. WHO’s plan brings government, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media, and the private sector together to improve the lives of older people, their families, and their communities. Assessing the ageing process of people can help monitor and foresee their health status, identify individuals susceptible to health problems, and plan therapeutic interventions. The SOHAM cohort study is located within this broad framework.
