Sarcopenia Prevention Study: A Targeted Exercise and Protein Supplementation Program for Elderly Indians (STEPS STUDY)
Project Description
The number of elderly populations in India has almost tripled in the last 50 years.
This can cause the number of elderly with a mobility disability, physical frailty, and
resulting consequences, such as falls and loss of autonomy also to increase. The
role of skeletal muscle in the prevention of frailty and falls needs to be understood
among Indians. Sarcopenia-associated changes translated into intricacies of skeletal
muscle changes that occur with aging have convoluted our understanding of the
condition and complicated progress toward treatment options. The prevalence of
sarcopenia among the aging population in India is not known. Therefore, the current
study objectives are to assess muscle mass and strength among elderly Indians to
diagnose sarcopenia (based on -2SD muscle mass and function of young healthy
Indians 18-40 years of age) and to assess the impact of a 12-week whey protein
supplementation and/or exercise program on skeletal muscle mass and function
among elderly Indians.
