M.Sc. MLT Clinical Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry at St John’s Medical College was established in the year 1963 for training medical students.  The Allied Health Science courses were started as a one-year Diploma course in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) in 1975, the Degree courses (B.Sc. in Medical laboratory technology) in 1999 and the Postgraduate courses (M.Sc. in Medical laboratory technology) in 2007.

The Biochemistry Laboratory stands as a cornerstone of the hospital’s diagnostic services, delivering precise, accurate and reliable reports. Beyond diagnostics, the laboratory also plays a vital role in academic and professional development. It provides structured training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducts certificate programs and regular workshops for strengthening quality culture and enhancing competency among laboratory professionals.

Over the years, it has evolved into a technologically advanced, automation-driven unit with an expanded test menu that now encompasses a broad range of routine, specialised and advanced biochemical investigations essential for diagnosis, monitoring and preventive healthcare.

State-of-the-art automated analysers, advanced point-of-care devices and streamlined laboratory information systems support a wide array of services that includes  various organ function tests, Blood gas and electrolytes analysis,  diabetic panels, cardiac panels,  hormonal assays, comprehensive health packages, tumour markers, myeloma panels, prenatal screening, new  born screening, neurological markers, vitamin assays and  therapeutic drug monitoring with the  capability to meet diverse clinical demands. A major technological leap has been the introduction of Tandem Mass Spectrometry (TMS) for advanced metabolic screening, enabling high-sensitivity, high-through put detection of numerous metabolic disorders of newborn thus facilitating early intervention. With NABL accreditation, well trained technical staff and stringent monitoring of internal and external quality control by qualified faculty, the Laboratory remains deeply aligned with the institution’s vision and mission in healthcare and provides the state of art platform for skill-based training for the AHS students.

In addition, the department conducts the following training programs annually for these students

  • ISO certification entitled Approach towards laboratory accreditation-an insight into ISO 15189 2022 & NABL 112”.
  • Certificate course in quality control and quality assurance entitled “Practical approach to Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC)” A Certificate course in QA & QC in a Clinical Laboratory.

Students of MSc MLT programme are trained within these state-of-the-art laboratories across all branches of laboratory medicine. They receive extensive hands-on exposure and are encouraged to “learn on the job” in a real clinical environment. All departments are staffed by experienced and nationally renowned faculty who are dedicated, approachable, and ever willing to teach, mentor, and guide students, ensuring a rich, rigorous, and supportive learning experience.
