Role of Kangaroo Mother Care in Preventing Neonatal Morbidity in the Hospital and Community: A review article
This review was undertaken to determine whether there is evidence to support the use of Kangaroo Mother
Care (KMC) in neonates specifically the low birth weight infants (LBWI) as an alternative to conventional
neonatal care before or after the initial period of stabilization with conventional care. The review authors
used the Cochrane neonatal review group’s standard search strategy to identify relevant studies. (http;//apps.
who.int/rhl/newborn/cd002771_bergham_com/en/) Medline search through Pub med (www.pubmed.com)
was done. The unit of analysis was the LBWI with birth weight <2500 g regardless of gestational age.
KMC is proved to be the standard method of care for LBWI in the developing and developed countries and
reduces morbidity and mortality. It has several short term and long term benefits and provides an alternative
to incubator care without separation from the mother. KMC was found to reduce stress in mother and LBWI,
relieve pain, and increase some measures of infant growth, breastfeeding rate and mother-infant bonding
