Potassium-enriched salt substitutes: supporting global cardiovascular and kidney health
WHO has released a new guideline recommending that regular table salt (approximately 100% sodium chloride) should be replaced with a lower-sodium salt substitute containing potassium. 1 The WHO guideline is supported by strong evidence from multiple randomised trials and systematic reviews showing potassium-enriched salt substitutes—which typically replace 15–50% of sodium chloride with potassium chloride—reduce blood pressure and lower risks of cardiovascular events and mortality in adults. 2,3
