Influence of age on the association of vascular risk factors with acute stroke (INTERSTROKE): a case–control study
Introduction
The incidence of stroke increases with age.1 Although the age-adjusted incidence of stroke is reducing in some regions, such as high-income regions, the absolute burden of stroke is increasing globally. This increase is due to an ageing population, as well as an increased incidence of stroke in young adults.1,2 Among people younger than 70 years, stroke incidence rates from 1990 to 2019 have increased by 15·0% (95% CI 12·0–18·0),1 highlighting the need to better understand the prevalence of risk factors for stroke, and the strength of the association of modifiable risk factors for stroke, in younger and older age groups
