Journal of Disability Management and Special Education 2017

The descriptive analytical study was planned to evaluate the communication skills and self esteem in adults with pre-lingual hearing impairment. Two groups, 35 adults with hearing impairment (HI) and 20 adults with normal hearing (NH) with ages ranging between to and 56 years were selected. Self esteem was assessed using Rosenberg's Self Esteem Scale. Communication skills were assessed through video analysis of participant's communicative interactions by three judges who are professionals in the field of speech and hearing bosed on live criteria-content, organization, delivery/language, body language, and attitude and energy. Between the groups, the self esteem scores were similar and the communication skills were significantly better in NH. There was a significant correlation between self esteem and communication skills in both Hi (p=0.534. p= 0.001) and NH (p=.0.472. p = 0.036). Improving communication skills will improve self esteem and vice versa and hence lead to the psychological well being and better quality of life.
