History of SJMCH

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) establishes the St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS) in Bangalore, with a vision to train healthcare professionals dedicated to service.

1963

Foundation Establishment

St. John’s Medical College is formally inaugurated and begins its first batch of medical students.

1968

Establishment

St. John’s Medical College Hospital (SJMCH) is established as the teaching hospital of the Medical College. The hospital begins operations with essential medical services and inpatient facilities.

1975

Establishment

Expansion of core clinical departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Orthopaedics. Establishment of specialized diagnostic services and laboratories.

1980s

Establishment

Growth into a major tertiary-care referral centre for Karnataka and neighbouring states.

Introduction of advanced specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, and Oncology.

Strengthening of postgraduate medical education and residency programs.

1990s

Establishment

Major infrastructure expansion including new inpatient blocks, ICUs, operating theatres, and advanced diagnostic units.

Establishment of super-speciality services such as Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Organ Transplant units.

Strengthened community health outreach programs and rural health training.

1990s

Establishment

Continued development as a quaternary-care hospital with advanced multidisciplinary departments.

Integration of digital health systems, research collaborations, and evidence-based clinical practices.

Recognized nationally for excellence in healthcare, academics, and medical innovation.
