Dr. Uma Maheswari Krishnaswamy is a Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and has over 25 years of experience in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep medicine 

Research Focus & Interests

Her research profile is characterized by a strong emphasis on sleep-disordered breathing and chronic airway diseases. Key areas of her scientific activity include:

• Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Focuses on epidemiology, data mining, phenotypes, and device development. She has conducted significant studies on the prevalence of OSA in patients with metabolic syndrome.
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Investigates COPD phenotypes and epidemiological trends.
• Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD): Involved in registries and management protocols for diffuse parenchymal lung diseases.
• Emerging Therapeutics: Has contributed to research regarding novel treatments for COVID-19, such as whole-lung irradiation and the management of COVID-associated pulmonary mucormycosis. 

Professional Roles & Recognition

• Awards: In February 2025, she was awarded the Philip Hopewell Prize for Global Respiratory Health Research.
• Academic Leadership: Serves as the Program Coordinator for the Fellowship in Sleep Disorders at St. John's Medical College.
• Global Collaborations: Mentors for the ATS-MECOR (American Thoracic Society-Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research) India Program and is a supplementary site mentor for the International Sleep Research Training Program.
• Committees: Active member of the Research Committee of the Indian Chest Society.
